Right to Be a Girl

A private washroom, warm water and practical support for girls at school.

When a girl gets her period at school, she needs more than advice. She needs a private place to change, water to wash and a sanitary pad when she needs one. At Ogako Lacan Primary School in Lamwo District, ACT Uganda worked with the school to provide these supports, with support from Mundo Cooperante. This is presented as its own project entry, separate from ACT Uganda’s existing Bridge to Girls’ Rights listing.

The girls’ washroom includes a private changing room, two bathrooms, two toilet stances and a wardrobe for menstrual supplies. A biogas system heats water that girls can use for warm compresses to ease menstrual cramps. A rainwater harvesting tank helps meet the facility’s water needs.

The completed washroom was handed over to Ogako Lacan Primary School in August 2026. The draft reports that 1,420 people were reached; the counting method or population definition was not specified.

Skills and supplies close at hand

ACT Uganda trained 200 girls to make reusable sanitary pads. Over the nine months following training, they produced 130 pads and stocked them in the washroom wardrobe for girls who need them.

Girls’ Rights Champions helped pupils talk openly about menstruation, ask questions and tell teachers what support they need. ACT Uganda worked with the wider school community to reduce the shame that can stop girls from seeking help.

Five of ACT Uganda’s seven partner schools have requested similar support. This detail page presents the Ogako Lacan work within the existing BGR record; requests for support at other schools are not represented as confirmed project commitments.
